What Do We Do To These Sinning General Overseers?
It is so rampant this day to read in the newspaper, social network and even hear on the radio, the sexual escapades of some so called men of God. It is painful the way these men of God are discrediting the entire leadership of the church by their reckless way of life, living in sexual sins and throwing caution to the wind.
As a personal policy and philosophy, I believe silence on the issue in itself is evil. Silence by those who should condemn the dastardly act is an endorsement of the same act.
When a leader of God’s people change wives at the same rate they change their boxer’s short, when public figures representing Jesus Christ and the church publicly celebrate the sin of masturbation, when men of God who are trusted with the sanctity of the word of God begin to use the same word to manipulate and exploit the flock of Jesus Christ in order to satisfy their sexual recklessness. Then the end is here!
The under shepherd who live in sexual sins is polluting the stream not only for his local church but for all who look up to Jesus for nurturing. “He leadeth me by the still waters, not troubled and polluted waters”. These are certainly the shepherds who fleece the sheep and lead the sheep astray.
It is extremely dangerous to join the multitude to sin against God and his bride. Some in their distorted and Lop-sided logic of manipulating the word of God for their selfish reasons will claim that Noah’s Son went to cover the father’s nakedness when he was drunk with wine and misbehaved. They advance this as a reason to cover up the sin of the father!
This is pathetic. Noah did not have a sin-partner. What happens to the conscience of the partner who committed the sexual sin with you? Covering up a sin is not the bible way to deal with the sin problem. Regardless of who the culprit is you cannot cover up your sin and expect to prosper in God.
There is a proper, decent and biblical way to handle the sexual sin and the sinning Pastor. There must be a public confession. This is the requirement of the bible, the manual and regulation to which every believer and pastor subscribe. The sin of a church leader is not just a sin against his or her spouse, it is a sin against the public. It is a case of betrayal of trust. It does not end at confessing to God or to your spouse. You must confess to our congregation also.
The church and congregation must hear and judge the case with the hope of restoring the offender back to faith after a spiritual discipline in the light of the scripture “Those who are strong should strengthen the weak”.
Spiritual reprimand is very vital in the restoration process because it ensures genuine repentance. For instance, culprit should be ban from public function for some time to enable him or her to retreat and seek God’s face. This is the bible pattern for serious minded and sincere leaders who fall, but have heaven in view.
Maranatha.
